  • The car must have been manufactured from 2008 through 2015.
  • The court decides when registration closes. Don't wait until it's too late.
  • As soon as the car is registered, it is locked so that no other owners can register it again.

The Volkswagen Group continued to cheat after they were exposed. For cars manufactured from 2016 to the present, see Dieselgate Norway.

Status
  • On September 15, 2025, all 4 class action lawsuits were appealed to the Borgarting Court of Appeal.
The EU Court has determined that the cars were illegal from the start and that they remain illegal after the so-called repair. The European Commission has confirmed that the ruling also applies to Norway.
We are now awaiting a response from the Borgarting Court of Appeal.
The latest developments in the case

September 2025

September 10: The Dieselgate case prevailed in the Netherlands.

September 15: All 4 class action lawsuits were appealed to the Borgarting Court of Appeal.

September 25: It was clarified that millions of cheat cars risk being deregistered.

December 2024

December 20: 4 New Class Action Lawsuits Were Initiated in the Norwegian Dieselgate Case. We are now divided into groups, as the court requested in the previous round.

May 2024

May 2: We submitted an appeal to the Borgarting Court of Appeal, where we referenced a number of countries in Europe that have handled the case the same way as us.

Mar 2024

March 25: Oslo District Court dismissed the class action lawsuit with "not like this, but like this". Norway thereby became the first country to attempt to dismiss car owners from receiving the compensation the EU Court has determined they are entitled to.

Jul 2023

July 14: Summons for class action lawsuit submitted to Oslo District Court. This marks the beginning of one of the largest legal processes in Norwegian history, as Volkswagen has shown no willingness to reach an agreement with Norwegian car owners.

Mar 2023

March 21: The EU Court rules that ALL those who HAVE or HAVE HAD a diesel car (REGARDLESS OF BRAND) are entitled to compensation if emissions were tampered with. In addition, the ruling states that AUTHORITIES ARE OBLIGATED TO HELP.

March 22: We received a new letter from the European Commission, confirming that Norwegian car owners are entitled to compensation. The letter refers to the recent ruling from the EU Court.

Feb 2023

February 20: The Court in Schleswig, Germany ruled that the repair was also illegal. This means that under the Sales Act (businesses) and the Consumer Purchase Act (private individuals), one has the right to cancel the purchase!

Jan 2023

Claims were submitted for an additional 400 cars.

January 20: Due to Volkswagen taking so long to compensate Norwegian owners, late payment interest is added to the claim, effective from when we prevailed in Germany in 2020. The claim therefore amounts to an average of 64,300 kroner per January 20, 2023.

Dec 2022

Claims were submitted for an additional approx. 1,200 cars.

Nov 2022

Claims were submitted for an additional approx. 800 cars.

November 11: We received a letter from the European Commission confirming that Norwegian car owners are entitled to compensation.

Sep 2022

September 2: Letter to the Consumer Authority requesting assistance.

September 21: Letter to the Justice Commissioner at the European Commission, requesting confirmation that the EU believes Norwegian owners should also receive 15% of the new car price back from Volkswagen.

September 23: Launch of free registration for the complaint case.

Jul 2022

Claims were submitted for an additional approx. 350 cars.

July 14: In 2011, Volkswagen adjusted the cheat software so that it showed correct emissions for temperatures between 15 and 33 degrees Celsius. Today, the EU Court ruled that this mechanism was illegal (see the ruling), as temperatures in the EU are often below 15 degrees Celsius. Norwegian average temperatures are significantly lower, making this recent ruling very relevant for Norwegian owners. The ruling came in connection with Austrian owners seeking to cancel their purchases.

Jun 2022

Claims were submitted for an additional approx. 300 cars.

June 7: The EU Court concludes that owners affected by Dieselgate are entitled to compensation. Authorities in each country shall calculate the compensation and assist owners in obtaining the compensation they are entitled to.

In Spain, it is decided that all affected parties shall receive information from the authorities that they are entitled to compensation, and they are given an additional 5 years to file claims – until 2026. The reason was that the authorities had initially only asked owners to have their cars repaired, but had not asked them to claim compensation. This is identical to the situation in Norway.

Feb 2022

The German Supreme Court rules that one has 10 years to file a claim, from when the scandal became known. The Dieselgate scandal became known in 2016.

Sep 2021

The European Commission asks Volkswagen to settle with the rest of Europe. The rest should receive the same as those who received compensation in Germany, i.e. 15% of the new car price. In Germany this corresponded to an average of 3,200 euros per car.

Jul 2021

July 7: Volkswagen ordered to pay more than 200 million euros to 63,000 Italian owners. Each owner receives 3,300 euros plus interest. Only those who had filed claims received compensation.

Why claim compensation in 2026?

Is it possible to succeed so long after the scandal became known?

Normally not, but in this case it is Volkswagen that has waited nearly 8 years to settle with Norway. It is therefore because of them that the case is still ongoing. It would be wrong if it were to benefit Volkswagen to drag out the process. Furthermore, the German Supreme Court has ruled that one has 10 years to file claims (until 2026)!

On top of that, the first time Norwegian owners received confirmation that they are entitled to compensation was in a letter from the European Commission dated November 11, 2022!

A total of 144,000 Norwegian cars were tampered with and no one has received compensation yet.

In principle, all affected parties should be compensated, but experience shows that only those who claim compensation will receive it. This was also the case in Germany, Spain, Italy, England and Wales.

You who have or had one of the affected cars are entitled to compensation. Volkswagen has paid over 400 billion kroner in fines and compensation worldwide, but nothing to Norwegian car owners – yet. Now it is Norwegian car owners' turn to be paid.

Dag Rune FlĂĄten has since 2013 helped Norwegian consumers and businesses recover between 500 million and 1 billion kroner in compensation from banks, finance companies, the automotive industry and a number of airlines.

Why haven't the Consumer Council and NAF sorted this out, as they did in Germany?

In Germany, it was the German version of the Consumer Council and NAF that ran the process against Volkswagen and ensured that car owners received compensation. Why hasn't the NORWEGIAN Consumer Council and NAF sorted this out for Norwegian car owners? This is of course a very good question.

NAF receives over 500 million kroner in membership fees from the country's motorists, but what do they give back? A magazine 6 times a year, which is so full of advertising that one would think it could be given out for free, yes, but do they give anything more?

And what has the Norwegian Consumer Council and Consumer Authority done? Those who are paid over 200 million tax kroner each year to help Norwegian consumers? The only visible engagement in this case has been to actively work against those who have actually tried to help Norwegian motorists.

In November 2022 we received a letter from the European Commission confirming that Norwegian owners are entitled to compensation. Nearly 800 of the participants in the complaint case forwarded this letter to the Consumer Authority, with a request to assist us in the work. NAF and the media also received the letter.

On March 21, 2023, the EU Court ruled that authorities are obligated to help car owners obtain the compensation they are entitled to. On March 22, 2023, we received a letter from the European Commission confirming that the EU ruling also applies to Norway.

How participating in Dieselgate through Bilklager.no works:
  1. Registration

If you wish to claim compensation for owning or having owned one of the affected cars, register for the Dieselgate complaint case.

You can choose between paying a registration fee and receiving 70% of the compensation, or you can register completely FREE and receive 50% of the compensation.

  2. Follow-up

We gather the participants, handle the entire complaint process and keep all participants informed through regular newsletters, updating them on progress throughout the life of the case.

There are many advantages to standing together as a powerful group when facing such a large and powerful opponent. A total of 144,000 Norwegian car owners are entitled to compensation, but only those who CLAIM compensation will receive it.

In line with the EU's recommendation, we claim compensation (15% of the new car price). In addition we claim late payment interest because Volkswagen is dragging out the process.

  3. Negotiation

We handle the complaint process and file claims for compensation on behalf of all our participants.

In September 2021, the EU urged Volkswagen to finish paying compensation to customers in Europe. According to the EU, we must receive the same as those in Germany, i.e. 15% of the new car price.

On November 11, 2022, we received a letter from the EU Commission's Justice Commissioner, Didier Reynders, confirming that Norwegian owners are also entitled to compensation.

Only those who claim compensation will receive it, which is why it is important that you file a claim. We can do all the work for you. All you need to do is register.

  4. Result

If and when we succeed, you will receive 70% of the compensation, or 50% if you choose free registration. The remainder goes to Dag Rune FlĂĄten and those who have assisted him in the work.

By participating in the group, your financial risk is limited to the registration fee.

This means that the process will be far less expensive and involves significantly lower risk than if you were to initiate a comprehensive complaint process on your own.

To those who are affected but unsure whether to register: Your car was affected in the same way as 11 million other cars. Norwegian consumers have at least as good rights as those in Germany and other countries. The case is NOW being processed in Norway. Therefore, NOW is when you must claim your rightful compensation.
